Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 7, 2026
The short version. ContextWise works without an account, and then your learning data never leaves your device. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking. If you choose to create an account, we store only what is needed for sync, friends and 1v1 challenges, and you can delete all of it from the app at any time.
This policy explains what information the ContextWise app and the contextwise.app website handle, why, and the choices you have. ContextWise is operated by Malek Wael ("we", "us"). Questions: privacy@contextwise.app.
1. Using the app without an account
By default, everything you do in ContextWise (your placement answers, reviews, progress, favorites, test date and settings) is stored only on your device, in the app's local database. We do not receive it. If you uninstall the app or clear your browser data, it is gone unless you exported a backup. The app's Export backup option creates a file that only you hold.
Pronunciation uses your device's built-in text-to-speech. On some devices or browsers, the system voice may be provided by the device or browser maker under their own privacy terms.
2. If you create an optional account
An account is only needed for sync across devices, friends and 1v1 challenges. When you sign in with Google, we store:
| Information | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address and a Google account identifier, received when you sign in with Google | To sign you in and keep your account secure |
| A username you choose | So friends can find you and see who challenged them |
| Your learning progress and review history | To sync your progress between devices |
| Friend requests and friendships | To show your friends list |
| 1v1 challenges: the questions, scores, level and time limit | To run challenges between you and a friend |
| Summary stats (for example, words learned and current streak) | Shown only to your accepted friends. You can turn this off on the account screen. |
We do not receive your Google password, contacts or any other Google data. We never sell your information, never use it for advertising and never share it with data brokers.
3. Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run ContextWise:
- Supabase hosts account sign-in and the account database, on servers in the European Union (Ireland).
- Google provides "Sign in with Google" if you choose it.
- GitHub Pages hosts this website. Like most web hosts, it may briefly log technical data such as IP addresses for security.
- Apple App Store and Google Play handle downloads and any future purchases. We never see your card details.
These providers process data only to deliver their service to us, under their own security and privacy commitments.
4. What we do not do
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No analytics, crash-reporting SDKs or tracking pixels in the app or on this website.
- No cookies on this website.
- No selling or renting of personal information.
- No AI processing of your answers on remote servers.
5. Keeping and deleting your data
We keep account data while your account exists. Use Delete account in the app's account screen to permanently delete your account and everything stored with it: profile, progress, friendships and challenges. Deletion is immediate in our database; copies may remain in our provider's encrypted backups for a short period before they expire. You can also email privacy@contextwise.app to ask us to delete your account.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict how it is used. You can export your learning data from the app at any time, and delete your account in the app. For anything else, email privacy@contextwise.app and we will respond within 30 days. If you are in the EU or UK, we process account data to provide the service you asked for (contract) and to keep it secure (legitimate interests), and you may complain to your local data protection authority.
7. Children
ContextWise is designed for high school students and adults. You can use the app without an account at any age, because no personal information leaves the device. You must be at least 13 (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country, if higher) to create an account. If you believe a child under that age has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Security
Data sent between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Account data is protected by row-level access rules, so each person can read only their own data and what friends choose to share with them.
9. International transfers
Account data is stored in the European Union. If you use ContextWise from elsewhere, your data is transferred there, and our providers use recognized safeguards for international transfers.
10. Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and for significant changes we will tell you in the app before they take effect.
11. Contact
Email privacy@contextwise.app with any privacy question or request.
